"Next!" the words came almost as a wakeup call for me as I became the next person in line to
buy my tickets.
"How many?" the woman asked.
"Three", I said. Sam better appreciate this.
"Twenty even", she tells me. I've been in New York long enough to know many people are
demanding. I took out my wallet and handed her my only twenty. In return she handed me three
slips of paper and called, "Next!"
As I walked away I looked down at my tickets. There were four young men on them and in big red
letters "The Beatles" were written. I slipped the tickets in my wallet, and put the wallet
back into my bag, as I walked home. As I walked up the steps to the apartment, me and my best
friend Jay shared, I grabbed my keys. I looked at my keys, my house key, my car key (both for
back home), and my apartment key.
Then there was my key chain a see through picture holder, on the front a picture of Jay, my
sister Sam, and I at the Statue of Liberty earlier this summer when Jay and I first moved
here. We looked almost like siblings we all had light hair and bright eyes. A smile grew on my
face. On the back was a war picture of my parents dated to 1942. My smile started to fade. I
unlocked the door and stepped inside the air conditioned room. As soon as I come in I see Jay
pouring himself a glass of what he calls his "morning Pepsi".
"Hey what are you doing up so early?" I asked.
"Couldn't sleep, more importantly where were you?" Jay asked.
"I went out and bought this" I brought out the tickets.
"No way, NO WAY" he grabbed the tickets. "Sam is going to go nuts!"
"I know right, by the way, where is Sam?"I took back the tickets.
"She's on the couch still sleeping", he went over and sat at the small table near the ends of
the counter an island.
"Where is the gift bag you gave me with my birthday present?" I looked down at the bracelet
Jay gave me less than a month ago for my 18th birthday. It had charms that had art utensils,
music notes, and funny faces everything in my life that made me happy.
"It's in the closet", I went over and grabbed the bag and a few sheets of tissue paper. I went
back to the island ant slipped the tickets into the bag with some paper covering them. I
signed the card and told Jay to sign it. As he was finishing his smile on his signature, we
heard movement. He jumped and the smile showed it. We threw the card into the envelope and
into the bag. We hid it just before Sam walked into the room.
"Happy 14th Birthday Sis" I grabbed my sister and gave her a tight hug.
"Happy Birthday, kiddo" Jay ruffled Sam's hair like a big brother and hugged her.
"So, what's for breakfast" Sam asked, slipping into a chair, still tired.
"What do you want?"I asked walking towards her.
"I really just want some cereal" She gave me a soft smile and went and made cereal and sat
back down.
"What do you want to do today?" I sat down next to her.
"Can we just have a lazy day at home today?" That caught Jay and I both by surprise Sam is
always begging to go shopping.
"Are you feeling ok?" Jay asked as he put his hand to Sam's forehead. Sam started to giggle
and removed his hand from her head.
"Yes I'm ok, I just miss our lazy days together."Sam told us.
"Ok, so where do you want to go for dinner tonight?"I asked
"Can we go to that diner down the block?"Sam asked.
"Sure" I gave her a reassuring smile. For the rest of the day we watched TV, listened to the
radio and different records, and relaxing.
As dinner ended Sam had to use the restroom and I told Jay to go home and set up the cake.
When Sam and I walked in to the house it was pitch black with the exception of two candles
that showed the number 14. I could tell Sam was surprised; she was speechless, as she walked
to the table with me following. She sat down while we sang happy birthday. After cake I
grabbed the bag from under the kitchen sink. I handed her the small package.
